Community Justice Executive Director Greg Jackson Statement In Response to Final Passage of Bipartisan Gun Safety Bill
Washington, D.C. – Today, Community Justice Action Fund (Community Justice) Executive Director Greg Jackson applauded the final passage of the Safer Communities Act, a bipartisan gun safety reform package of commonsense measures to reduce violence and save lives. The bill now heads to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law:
“Today is a victory for survivors, families and communities who have been impacted by gun violence. For the first time in three decades, Congress acted on this public health crisis with an urgency we have seen on countless issues, turning our collective pain into power and delivering to the President this historic legislation that will help to keep guns out of our communities and ensure survivors have the wrap-around support and resources they need to heal.
“For more than six years, Community Justice has led the fight alongside gun violence survivors across America for a comprehensive approach to fighting the gun violence epidemic, advocating for policies that invest in community-based solutions proven to make our families safer.
“This milestone is hard-won, but there is more work to be done and this must mark only the beginning of our march toward a future free of gun violence. Especially for Black and brown communities disproportionately affected by its devastation, the horrors of gun violence remain too often a matter of life and death.
“We will continue to demand our institutions act to save the lives of our children, to protect our families from the blood-tinged tide of gun violence rising in America and to do what is right.”
