The Community Justice Action Fund applauds the Maryland Senate for overriding Governor Hogan's veto of SB 708, which would allocate critical funding for violence intervention and prevention programs across the state.
In 2020 during the last session, CJAF worked alongside violence intervention staff, victim support service providers, frontline advocates and allied organizations to advocate, host briefings, testify at hearings, organize site visits, strategy calls and engagement of Senate leaders about this critical funding. Led by Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence and CJAF, this coalition included ROCA Inc., R.O.A.R., Shock Trauma, Safe Streets Baltimore, Giffords, The HAVI and other impactful local organizations.
This critical step brings the state one step closer to securing $3.6 million in funding from the 2020 budget to invest in community based solutions to end gun violence in communities hardest hit by gun violence.
Next, CJAF is organizing a series of advocacy action events leading up to the Maryland House of Delegates deliberation and vote on whether to override this veto.
